Many golfers who are serious about improving will at one point or another go for a private golf lesson.

It could be because the Club Championship is coming up, or it could be because you just lost $100 to your playing partners, but either way, you are looking for some improvement in your golf game.

A good friend of mine recently loaned me his new golf lesson DVD, and I watched it the other night. I saw some surprising things that I think might be helpful for my swing. There were also some good tips for improving your putting game. This is the first golf lesson DVD I’ve ever watched, and I was actually surprised by the level of quality instruction on it.

I think I’m going to have to recommend that the rest of my golf friends open their minds to the idea of video instruction. A golf lesson DVD may not be as good as training with a personal instructor, but it’s pretty close.

Is this the best golf book?

There have been so many great golf books written over the years, but “If you play Golf, you’re my Friend,” by Harvey Penick is widely considered to be the best golf book out there.

It follows on from his Little Red Book and has more of the same wisdom and advice through it’s pages.

Once of the best stories relates to the first golf lesson his gives his son-in-law. After 6 months of struggling on his own, Penick tells him, “[athletes like you] need to be humbled before they can learn the game of golf.”

This sums up golf perfectly. It doesn’t care what you are off the course, how successful you may be or what your wife looks like. It will teach you the lessons of patience and humility.

Gems like these make it the best golf book I’ve read.

Getting instruction to improve your golf game is a great idea, and it’s really the only way to erase bad habits from our golf game.

According to my wife, I was spending too much time on golf and not enough time on her. In a scenario that played out like an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, she offered a compromise.
